Books + Coffee = Happiness

Art supplies are expensive

Listening to: The Barber of Seville - Gioachino Rossini
Feeling: Content

Had a pretty good day today. Somewhat productive, I guess. Cleaned hamster cage (was unable to clean it last week since I was sick and was afraid of my hamsters falling ill), went to the gym to work out, went to Michaels and did some chores while taking the rest of the day off.

I joined my school's drawing club recently and we've been practicing drawing figures and gestures. I've also learned that it was better to use a softer lead pencil for the drawing since the texture was different, so I went out to get some today. I ended up getting some 4B pencils since those were the types that the others used in the club. Unfortunately, like most art supplies, it wasn't cheap. I got two pencils for $4, which I guess really isn't THAT bad, considering I had a coupon and a few weeks ago, I had gotten a Faber Castell black ultra-thin fine liner for $6 (but I had a coupon for that too).

I guess getting stuff for your hobbies can get quite expensive, since my craft supplies take their toll on my wallet. Clays, paints, brushes and glaze for my clay projects while I also get coloured string, hot glue guns and felts for my felt projects. Haven't done either of them for a while and I definitely miss doing them. Hopefully when I'll have some more free time after the semester is over, I'll get a chance to work on those projects.

PS. Took the photo with my phone, so the quality is pretty crappy, but it's the most convenient way of taking a photo. :)

  1. I definitely know the sucker punch to the wallet when buying art supplies. A good sketchbook is roughly $20, and the markers I own retail for $3.. a piece. So the cost adds up in the end. You don't know how jealous I am that your school has figure drawing... you'd think that every uni has a drawing club BUT no, mine doesn't. >:(

    1. I know. I wanted a sketchbook badly, but the price was appalling. Since it's just clubs and not a class, I decided to stick with just plain looseleaf paper instead. But i really like the texture of those sketchbooks! Yeah we're just doing basic stuff for now, such as proportions and gestures, twists etc. We're following this book by Andrew Loomis (which I think is out of production) and it's really good for anatomy and gesture drawings. I really like doing figure drawings since I usually draw those more than anything else.

    2. How are the models for figure drawing? I'm thinking of seeing if I can stop by (if students from outside your school can come) and do some myself.

  2. We haven't actually done any live drawings, though we did take a few pics from this website (and selected the nude option for the sake of art, since it's easier to see the muscles), and sketched out their gestures and positions. I think they'd be open to non-members showing up since they don't seem to mind. We have clubs from 3pm-6pm on Fridays, but people usually don't show up on time. I was the only person there for an hour until people showed up. Both good and bad... They directed their attention on me and observed everything that I did. LOL. You free during that time?

    1. HAHAHA, nude option all the way for the sake of art! I would only be able to come every 2nd week and late (if I really could) just because transit takes a while. Cost per session?

    2. Hmm I see. I usually don't stay up to 6 but close like 5:40ish, since I try to see if I can match my mom's shift schedule. If she gets off work at like 5:30, I go home with her. We don't have a pro teacher, just a few graduate (?) students who are in IAT (interactive arts and technology), so they draw/design a lot of stuff on the computer. They think their skills are normal, but I personally think that they draw quite well. I've never taken any art classes/lessons before so I'm learning a lot. Since it's just clubs, there's no cost for the sessions.
